Hey Everyone,

What antivirus program do you use with Jaws? I'm looking for one that is free and at least relatively accessible. I'm running Jaws 17 and windows 10.

Thanks!
Mike

It sounds like you are looking for AVG antivirus. Go to:

win 10 already comes with antivirus software, windows defender. that's really all you would need.

I have used Windows Defender, and before it Windows Security essentials for years and have always found it works fine.

I use Microsoft Security Essentials, now Windows Defender, and it's done well. It also is the one that's stayed pretty consistently accessible. I've tried other anti-virus programs, but it always seems that sooner or later, they change it, and break the limited accessibility the program had. I know some say Windows Defender isn't as thorough as other anti-virus programs, but it's managed to keep my computer safe. The one time I did get messed up by a virus, I was actually using one of the more expensive anti-virus programs. All comes down to personal preference.

For a paid antivirus solution, I would suggest viper. I have used it for years, and have not had any problems with it. But for a free solution, I agree with what others have said about Microsoft security essentials.

I've heard that windows defender isn't all that great.

It has been improved for Windows 10.
As was said, for a free solution it will be accessible and work well.
The other part of your security is your habits.
If you ignore the warnings, or insist on using bad websites, or downloading free questionable stuff, it won't help.
I us Viper as well, but that one cost a bit.
Free, go with what has been suggested.

Not free, but ESET NOD32. There is a 30 day free trial. They specifically mention the testing they
do to make sure it fully works with JAWS on their site.

I'm using windows defender and for an added protection malware bites. Before switching to windows defender I was using micro trend but I really do not suggest any one to buy micro trends sweet. Its sorta accessible with jaws. There are issues reading monthly reports, parts of the enterface are not read unless a user uses jaws' OCR.

This might be an unrelated topic, but because malware bites was mentioned, I figured I'd post this here. When I got a used hp laptop to replace my old one that bit the dust, it came with malware bites installed on. The people who had sold me the laptop installed jaws for me, and none of us were aware of the major issue with malware bites, and my version of jaws, which is 13. Anyway, when I got the laptop home and turned it on, I discovered that malware bites had thought that jaws was a virus. After getting malware bites off of this system and getting jaws back on it, everything worked well. To me, malware bites isn't the most screen reader friendly solution out there.

What am I missing with Vipre? I talked to a custer rep early this year and was assured Vipre was accessible, so I downloaded the free trial (with plans to buy if it went well) and have found it inaccessible. I called back and got a different rep and she said that Vipre was NOT accessible unless I could find a version from 2013 or so off of EBay or the like.
And last I heard, Malware was not very accessible, either, it was what I'd been using a few years ago. I have JAWS 14-is it accessible now?

Malware bites sorta accessible but if you do not want to figure out how to use malware bites then its not for you.

It's not necessarily that I don't want to find out how to work with it, I couldn't get it to do necessary things. My skills are okay but not great. So I'm asking for the steps I'm not figuring out.

I use Vipre daily. Infact I've been so impressed with it's accessibility, I've kept it for several renewals.
The other I also find accessible, but not necessary if you have Vipre installed.
If you ask, I'll post a how to use it board.
Whoever says it isn't accessible, just wasn't aware how to use it.
It will, and has worked with Jaws 14.

That sounds great, thank you.

It use to be easier.
I just set mine to remove them after a specific time limit, and didn't worry about them much when I used it.
